PRP use was largely unheard of until well-known athletes like Kobe Bryant and Tiger Woods got this non-surgical regenerative injection treatment for their injuries. These days, PRP is used not only by athletes, but also by Hollywood personalities like Kim Kardashian for aesthetic purposes like facial rejuvenation and skin tone enhancement. PRP is now mainstream and accepted world-wide as a non-surgical treatment for many orthopedic and aesthetic conditions.
The procedure involves extracting blood from the patient's arm and processing this (using a laboratory centrifuge) to separate the plasma, platelets and their growth factors from other blood components. The platelets are centrifuged down to a more "enriched" concentration and injected into the patient's injured muscle, tendon, ligament, or joint to grow new cells and tissue. The greater amount of growth factors help grow, heal and strengthen torn or weak muscle, tendon, ligament, cartilage and bone.
